ESWC 2011 Tutorial on Linked Services

Start date:
Tuesday, 31 May, 2011
End date:
Tuesday, 31 May, 2011
Place-Venue:

Heraklion, Greece

In May 2011, two PlanetData members; Barry Norton and Andreas Harth, have organized and presented tutorials on Linked Services at ESWC 2011.

Linked Services is the generic term for the combination of Linked Data and service technology. A major interest here is in the coexistence and interaction of Linked Data principles and best practice with the principles of REST. Two existing approaches to Linked Service realisation are Linked Open Services (LOS), the subject of an earlier ISWC tutorial, and Linked Data Services (LIDS).

The tutorial at the European Semantic Web Conference gave a thorough technical grounding for Linked Services, including: an introduction to RDF, SPARQL and HTTP; Linked Data principles and best practice; REST philosophy and principles; and considered the motivation of LOS and LIDS, their alignment and combined principles, and several examples.
Topics that have been delivered are:

  • Web Architecture (HTTP, URIs, REST)
  • Linked Data (RDF, SPARQL, Principles, Datasets)
  • Linked Data Service Principles and Examples
  • Linked Open Service Principles and Examples
  • Service Descriptions
  • Developing Linked Service Technologies (Discovery, Composition, etc.)
